Incorporating shoji screens is important to achieving a Japanese design inspired room or area. Shoji screens are versatile and can be used as partitions for office space, rooms, windows and doors.
Nagomi Design supplies the highest quality custom shoji doors to suit your project’s requirements. There are many designs to select from, both traditional and modern.

Why shoji is an ideal interior for an Australian home

Geometrically precise and distinctive, shoji screens allow spatial flexibility, while their effect in softening and diffusing light gives a feeling of warmth and tranquility to any room. The exquisite craftsmanship and proud traditions of shoji make them a wonderful and subtle addition to Australian homes.

A traditional shoji screen has an intricate “kumiko” framework which supports translucent paper sheeting. The framework gives shoji its distinctive and ordered appearance – while the paper maintains privacy, and allows soft light to pass through.

Nagomi Design’s shoji screens and sliding doors have a sleek, compact appearance and hidden integration technology that is both well-designed and functional. They are ideal as a wall cabinet or as an optical screen between two spaces. These made-to-measure timber-frame sliding doors are available in a variety of designs, so you can find one that suits your requirements and your interior design.

What is SHOJI?

Shoji screens and dividers

When fitted to a window, shoji screens replace curtains by letting in just the right amount of light from outside into the room.
They can also act as a divider, keeping a room open during the day and closed when necessary.
Shoji is as practical as it is beautiful.

We have the following types of shoji available for your home:

  • Sliding window shoji to replace blinds or curtains
  • Room dividers
  • Wardrobe shoji

The horizontal and vertical wood in the shoji can be combined to create many different designs.
The frame is available in black, as well as natural wood colour.
You’ll be able to find your favorite design in the gallery on our website.

Shoji doors

As an interior door, shoji can be used at any entrance to a room.
If you choose to use shoji doors, the matching of shoji and kumiko will add a touch of luxury to your room.
While traditional shoji doors are made of Japanese paper, Nagomi Design uses acrylic paper, which is similar to Japanese paper but stronger and more resistant to tearing. The paper can be replaced by thicker acrylic panels or glass to create a double-sided door.
A shoji door helps to bring natural light into the room.
They can be fitted with a skylight over the door to create an even brighter atmosphere.

Shoji door design

Our shoji doors are also available with designs that include a footer panel at the bottom.
The door is usually constructed as a normal swinging door with a thicker shoji frame and a handle and hinges. The door can also be used as a cavity door or a sliding door. They can be fitted as room doors, bathroom doors and wardrobe doors.
The frame can be painted in any colour to suit your taste.

Kumiko shoji

A collaboration between shoji screens and traditional kumiko patterns

Kumiko is a delicate woodworking technique in which grooves, holes and hosozo are made in thinly split wood, which is then assembled piece by piece without nails.
Several patterns and types of kumiko woodwork can be fitted into our shoji screens. They can be placed in a single square of a shoji, or they can be placed on a surface.
The inclusion of kumiko patterns in shoji creates a powerful, dignified impression of luxury and exclusivity. Enjoy the delicate and elegant beauty of Japanese shoji screens in your room!
